GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS TO HOST MICHIGAN AND MICHIGAN STATE

MINNESOTA WILL MEET MICHIGAN STATE SUNDAY: The Golden Gopher will wrap up their double dual meet home series with teams from Michigan Sunday with 15th ranked Michigan State. The Michigan State Spartans are 3-4 in dual meet action this season and are 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Spartans are coming off competition at the National Dual Championships last weekend in Iowa City, Iowa. The Spartans did not place in the tournament. They drew third-ranked Iowa in the first round and lost 36-3. Michigan State went on to defeat Montana State Northern 29-9, but lost to Arizona State 30-18 in the consolation bracket. Michigan State has also competed at the Northern Iowa Open, the Midlands Championships and have faced nationally ranked competition in Arizona State. Leading the way for the Spartans is Jordan, Minn., native Pat McNamara. McNamara is a sophomore and is currently ranked No. 2 at 133 pounds. He finished fifth at the NCAA Championships last season. The Spartans also have three other nationally ranked wrestlers. Junior Will Hill is ranked sixth in the country at 174, junior Nick Muzashvilli is ranked seventh at 197 and sophomore Matt Lamb is ranked 19th at heavyweight.
NO. 2 GOLDEN GOPHERS FINISH SECOND AT NATIONAL DUALS: The No. 2 ranked Golden Gophers came up short in the championship match against No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State 20-17 Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Minnesota fell behind early to the top-ranked Cowboys. The Golden Gophers won their last three matches, including a pin by junior college transfer BROCK LESNAR (Webster, S.D.) to score six points to make the final 20-17. Saturday night, Minnesota shocked No. 3 Iowa with a 21-14 victory to qualify for the championship match. Once again, Lesnar stunned the Iowa crowd with a pin over No. 2 ranked Wes Hand to score six points for Minnesota to secure the victory. This marked only the fourth time Iowa has been defeated in Carver-Hawkeye's 17-year existence. Earlier Saturday, Minnesota shutout Augsburg College 48-0 in the first round and defeated No. 7 Central Michigan 25-9 in the second round. Minnesota increased its dual meet record to 7-2. Both losses are to No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State.
