SOCCER BLANKS PURDUE, 4-0

10/10/1999 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

The University of Minnesota soccer team moved into sole possession of third-place in the Big Ten Conference standings, Sunday, with a 4-0 victory over Purdue at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The Golden Gophers improved their record to 7-5-0 overall and 5-3 in conference play with the win, their fourth straight shutout victory at home.

The Gophers would tally all the scoring they would need in the fourth minute of the match when Erin Holland placed a looping pass over the Purdue defense at the feet of junior forward Laurie Seidl. Seidl fired the shot in the net from the left side to collect her fourth goal of the season.

Samantha Myers converted on a Nicole Lee pass to give the Gophers a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute of action. Lee showed some fancy footwork and drew defenders to her before dishing off to a charging Myers on the left side.

Seidl added two assists to the victory, the Gophers' best offensive output of the season. Seidl broke away from the Boilermakers' defense at midfield and served the ball to Lee, who nudged the ball into the net at the 49:49 mark. Megan Johnson closed the scoring in the 59th minutes on Seidl's second assist of the match.

Gopher goalkeepers Julie Eibensteiner and Dana Larson shared the shutout victory in net. Eibensteiner started and played the first 75 minutes, picking up four saves and the win. Larson relieved Eibensteiner and secured the shutout but did not record a save.

No. 16 Michigan leads the Big Ten with a 7-0-1 record, one-half game ahead of second-place No. 5 Penn State at 6-0-1.
