Michigan scored two first-half goals within a 41-second span to defeat the Golden Gopher soccer team, 2-0, in Big Ten action at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Friday. The No. 14 Wolverines hold on to the conference lead with an 8-0-1 mark (11-3-1 overall) with one match remaining. Minnesota falls to 7-6-0 overall and 5-4-0 in Big Ten play.

The Gophers had held their opponents scoreless at home for over 400 minutes and four games before Kacy Beitel netted the Wolverines' first goal at the 20:19 mark. Michigan's Emily Schmitt served the ball into the box on a corner kick and after a missed shot, Laurie Peterson collected the ball and passed it to Beitel for the goal.

Less than a minute later, Beitel broke down the center of the Gopher defense and dished a pass to Abby Crumpton, who scored at 21:01.

Michigan outshot the Gophers by a 16-6 margin in the first half, but Minnesota matched the Wolverines' eight shots in the second half of play. Minnesota's best scoring opportunity came up empty-handed when Laurie Seidl's shot hit the crossbar and landed harmlessly behind the Michigan goal.

Goalkeeper Carissa Stewart captured the shutout victory in net, collecting eight saves. Minnesota's Dana Larson was credited with five saves after coming into the match in relief of starter Julie Eibensteiner in the 33rd minute.

Minnesota's next action is Sunday, when the Gophers host Illinois State at noon.
