andThe University of Minnesota soccer team started its five-match homestand on the right foot on Friday, defeating Indiana by a score of 2-0. The Golden Gophers improved their record to 6-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in Big Ten play.

Minnesota forced the action early in the match and scored its first goal at the 19:57 mark before Indiana (2-6-4, 1-3-2) had even managed a single shot. Laurie Seidl ended her eight-match scoring drought, scoring her first goal since the second match of the season, firing a pass from Nicole Lee past Hoosier goalkeeper Ashkley Davis.

The Gopher defense limited the Hoosiers to just two first-half shots and built a 19-9 shot advantage in the match. Still, Minnesota clung to a 1-0 lead, unable to tally an insurance goal despite several excellent scoring opportunities. Senior forward Megan Johnson had one such opportunity breaking away with a Lee pass. After dodging the charging Hoosier keepe, Johnson sailed an open-net shot wide of goal.

Minutes later Johnson was able to redeem herself blasting a shot home from 10-yards left of goal, giving the Gophers a 2-0 cushion at the 75:16 mark. Midfielder Liz Wagner was credited with the assist.

Sophomore Julie Eibensteiner started her second match of the season at goalkeeper for the Gophers and collected four saves in the shutout victory.

Minnesota continues its doubleheader Big Ten weekend on Sunday with a match against Purdue starting at 1 p.m. at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
