BADGERS TOP GOLDEN GOPHERS 20-17 IN OVERTIME

The Golden Gophers fell short to Wisconsin in overtime 17-14 to fall to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin improves its record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota came out firing and executed an 86-yard drive that resulted in a 24-yard reception by senior Arland Bruce from Billy Cockerham to put Minnesota up 7- 0.

Wisconsin tied the game 7-7 after Dayne punched the ball in from three yards. Minnesota grabbed the lead again when senior running back Thomas Hamner caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Cockerham.

Just before the half, Wisconsin tie the game when freshman quarterback Brooks Bollinger connected with Nick Davis on an 81-yard touchdown pass to even the score 14-14.

After no scoring in the third quarter, Minnesota freshman Dan Nystrom split the uprights from 37 yards out to put the Golden Gophers up 17-14. With just three minutes left, Wisconsin tied the game after Vitaly Pisetsky nailed a 36-yard field goal.

Minnesota had the first posession in the overtime period, but failed to score. Turning the ball over to Wisconsin, the Badgers marched down the field and Pisetsky kicked a 31-yard field goal to win the game 20-17.

Hamner finished the day with 144 yards on 27 carries. He also caught seven passes for 92 yards and one touchdown. Cockerham completed 12-of-27 pass attempts for 197 yards and two touchdowns.

Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne compiled 80 yards on 25 carries and one touchdown. Bollinger completed 11-of-21 pass attempts for 212 yards and one touchdown.

Minnesota will travel to Urbana- Champaign, Ill., next weekend to face the Fighting Illini. The game is slated for an 11:10 a.m. kickoff on ESPN2.
