GOLDEN GOPHERS DOWN WOLVERINES 6-1 IN COLLEGE HOCKEY SHOWCASE

HauseThe Golden Gopher men's hockey team downed the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 6-1 in the first game of the College Hockey Showcase. Goaltender Adam Hauser knocked aside 36 of 37 shots and came within 1:55 of recording his second straigh shutout.

Minnesota jumped on the board early with three goals in the first 8:03 of the game. Nate Miller got the Gophers started at 5:20 of the first period when he wristed a shot from the slot past Michigan goaltender Kevin O'Malley. Erik Westrum picked up his first of two goals on the night just 2:18 after Miller's goal when he put a shot in the upper left corner of the net on the power play. Just 25 seconds later, Stuart Senden picked up a loose puck at the Michigan blueline and fired a shot that beat O'Malley on the glove side to make it 3-0. That finished the night for O'Malley as a goaltending change was made by Michigan.

Minnesota continued to put the pressure on in the second period as they pushed the lead to 5-0 behind goals by Westrum and Nick Anthony. In the third, Pat O'Leary picked up his first career goal as he beat Michigan goaltender L.J. Scarpace between the pads to give the Golden Gophers a 6-0 lead.

Michigan got on the board at 18:05 of the third period to break up Hauser's shutout bid. The sophomore played outstanding hockey coming up with several big saves to keep the Wolverines at bay.

Minnesota finished the night 2-9 on the power play while Michigan converted on one of 10 chances. The teams were whisted for a total of 28 penalties.

Minnesota will face the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing on Saturday night in the finale of this year's College Hockey Showcase.
