GOLDEN GOPHERS DEFEAT VIRGINIA IN ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE
12/1/1999 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
With the Golden Gophers leading 40-36 at halftime, the Cavaliers scored two quick baskets to tie the game at 40. Then Przybilla went to work. He scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half and five of his six blocks. Virginia was no match for the bigger Golden Gophers on the glass as Minnesota owned the rebounding margin 41-32 and shot 55 percent from the field and held Virginia to 36 percent.
Minnesota never let Virginia take the lead and held them at bay when the game got close. It wasn't until the final minute of play before the Golden Gophers started to pull away on the strength of a 10-2 run. Minnesota hit six consecutive free throws in the final minute of play to put away the Cavaliers.
Junior John Blair Bickerstaff scored 13 points, Kevin Burleson scored nine points and Dusty Rychart scored eight for the Golden Gophers.
Virginia was led by Travis Watson, who scored 16 points, followed by Donald Hand, who scored 13.
The Golden Gophers return to action on Saturday, Dec 4, when they take on Valparaiso at 1 p.m. at Williams Arena.
