GOPHER WOMEN OVERCOME TWO-GOAL DEFICIT FOR SWEEP OF DARTMOUTH

12/12/1999 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

sixthMinnesota overcame 2-0 and 3-1 deficits and Ronda Curtin's goal with 1:50 left in the third period gave the seventh-ranked Gophers a 4-3 win over sixth-ranked Dartmouth and a sweep of the teams' two-game non-conference series.

Dartmouth, 5-4-0, jumped on top 2-0 on goals by Lydia Wheatley and Carly Haggard, the latter scoring her third of the weekend, but Laura Slominski scored at 12:51 of the opening period for Minnesota, 12-5-0, just 51 seconds after Haggard's goal, to cut the lead in half.

The teams traded goals in the second period with Correne Bredin scoring at 16:53 for the Big Green while Minnesota's Nadine Muzerall scored on the power play with 1:04 left in the period to get back to within one goal.

The Gopher had a 29-16 advantage in shots on goal through two periods but were unable to even the score until Ambria Thomas scored a power-play goal at 4:34 to tie the game at 3-3.

Following Curtin's 13th goal of the season, which gave Minnesota its only lead, Dartmouth pulled goalie Amy Ferguson with 1:39 to play and managed six shots attempts. However, three were blocked and only two got through to Gopher goalie Erica Killewald despite the Big Green maintaining possession of the puck for most of the final minute.

Ferguson finished the game with a career-high 37 saves while Killewald stopped 21 shots.
