FOUR-GOAL SECOND PERIOD LEADS GOPHERS TO 6-1 WIN

poweMinnesota scored four times in the second period, including three power-play goals, and posted a 6-1 win over Cornell at Mariucci Arena.

Entering the game, the Gophers had gone 19 consecutive power plays without scoring a goal and failed on their first chance in the opening period. However, Emily Buchholz ended that streak at 4:11 of the second period with her third goal of the season, on a shot from the top of the left circle.

Jenny Schmidgall, the nation's leading goal-scorer, notched her 27th goal of the season at 13:22 of the period on a 5-on-3 power play and Ambria Thomas made it 3-0 a minute later, also on the power play.

Courtney Kennedy's shot from the right point, her ninth of the season, with 2:50 to play in the second period gave Minnesota a 4-0 lead.

Minnesota made it 5-0 when Laura Slominski scored from the middle of the slot at 12:05 of the final period before Cornell's Jenel Bode broke up the shutout with 3:59 to play. Kris Scholz rounded out the scoring with 2:02 to play in the game.

The Gophers had a 40-15 advantage in shots on goal, including a 19-3 advantage during the second period. Alanna Hayes had 34 saves for the Big Red while Minnesota's Erica Killewald made 14 stops.

The two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Mariucci Arena.
