NO. 2 GRAPPLERS DESTROY NO. 7 ILLINOIS 30-6

drThe No. 2-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team destroyed No. 7-ranked Illinois 30-6 this evening at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers are now 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the Big Ten. Illinois drops to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota won nine matches in the dual meet. Senior Josh Holiday began the evening with an 18-8 major decision over Bill Zeman at 165 to earn the Golden Gophers the early 4-0 lead. At 174, junior Delaney Berger defeated Ben King, 12-6 to increase the lead to 7-0. Junior Brandon Eggum, ranked No. 1 in the country, improved his overall record to 21-0 with a 11-4 decision over No. 16-ranked Nate Patrick at 184.

Senior Tim Hartung, also ranked No. 1 in the nation, kept his unbeaten record with a 15-4 major decision over No. 12-ranked Pat Quirk at 197. Hartung is now 25-0 on the season. Junior heavyweight Brock Lesnar improved his flawless dual meet record to 9-0 with a 9-2 decision over No. 7-ranked Karl Roesler. At halftime, the Golden Gophers led 17-0.

At 125, freshman Leroy Vega defeated Steve Doerrer 13-7 to earn Minnesota three more team points. Senior Bart Golyer continued the winning ways at 133 with a 13-5 major decision over Dave Stoltz. Illinois1 only win on the night was by No. 6-ranked Carl Perry, who pinned No. 11 Chad Erikson in 32 seconds to earn the Fighting Illini six points.

Minnesota won the last two matches. Senior Troy Marr, ranked 15th in the nation, knocked off No. 7-ranked Adam Tirapelle 6-2 at 149. No. 1-ranked senior Chad Kraft improved his overall record to 16-1 with a 3-0 decision over Griff Powell at 157.

The Golden Gophers will wrestle Ohio State Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion.
