3/5/1999 12:00:00 AM | Softball

first-innSteph Klaviter threw a one-hit shutout, and Shannon Beeler provided the offense with a first-inning, two-run home run as the 21st-ranked Minnesota softball team defeated Texas A&M 2-0 in its second game of the Aggie Invitational II. Earlier in the day, the Gophers (17-4) scored in every inning and defeated Butler, 8-0.

Klaviter, who struck out five batters in her third career one-hitter, won her 68th game as a Gopher, breaking the previous record of 67 wins set by Brenda Bixby from 1988-92. Beeler's home run came with two out in the first inning after Tammi Hays had reached on an error. Beeler now has six home runs this season and 36 in her career, two shy of the all-time Big Ten home run record.

In the first game against Butler, the Gophers scored two runs in the first inning on Erin Brophy's double, one run in the second inning on a wild pitch and two runs in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Morgan Holden and a run-scoring single by Lara Severson. Beeler hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to increase the Gopher advantage to 6-0. The Gophers scored two runs in the fifth inning to have the eight-run mercy rule invoked. Rayny Camacho pitched a three-hit shutout for her second win of the season.

Minnesota, the only undefeated team left in the round-robin tournament, will play two games Saturday against Butler at 4:30 p.m. and Texas A&M at 6:45 p.m.
