WOMEN'S TENNIS EDGES OHIO STATE, 4-3

The two teams were tied, 3-3, before Wang's come-from- behind victory at No. 6 singles. Wang dropped the first set to Laura Maloney, 6-3, but won the second set, 6-3. Wang didn't allow a game in the third set as she closed out the victory, 6-0. She remains undefeated during the 1998-99 season with a 9-0 record, 5-0 in the Big Ten.
Minnesota opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Seniors Tarah Elkins and Sitinee Rangsithienchai defeated Michelle Matko and Monica Rincon, 8-3. The duo has won nine straight matches and is 7-2 in conference play. The No. 3 doubles team of junior Nora Sauska and freshman Jen Howard defeated Maloney and Claudia Castro, 8-3.
Junior Kim Simonsen won her match at No. 2 singles, defeating Matko, 6-4, 6-2, and Rangsithienchai defeated Briana Harris at No. 3, 7-6, 7-6, putting the Gophers up 3-0. Ohio State then won three singles matches to tie the match, 3-3, before Wang won at No. 6 to end the match.
The win moves Minnesota into sole possession of second place in the Big Ten, ahead of Wisconsin (6-2), which hosts Indiana on Saturday and Purdue on Sunday. First- place Northwestern (7-1) hosts Michigan State on Saturday and Michigan on Sunday.
Minnesota plays Penn State (3-13, 0-9) Sunday at 10 a.m. in University Park, Pa.
