DEFENSE EDGES OFFENSE 69-64 IN SPRING GAME

practicesThe Golden Gopher defense topped the offense 69-64 at the annual spring football game at the HHH Metrodome this afternoon in front of 2,347 fans. The spring football game ends a series of 15 practices over the past four weeks to prepare for the 1999 regular season.

Leading the way for the defense this afternoon was senior strong safety All-American Tyrone Carter with nine tackles. Carter also compiled three tackles for a loss, two sacks and an interception which he returned for 49 yards. Junior linebacker Sean Hoffman also was credited with seven tackles including one sack.

Senior Billy Cockerham led the offense with 123 yards on 14-of-25 pass attempts. Junior Andy Persby also racked up 87 yards on 12-of-21 pass attempts including two touchdowns. First year quarterback Asad Abdul-Khaliq completed 9-of-17 pass attempts for 50 yards and one touchdown strike.

Leading the team in rushing was freshman Tellis Redmon with 25 yards on six carries. Senior Thomas Hamner collected 20 yards on six carries. Senior Spencer Dettman caught seven passes for 48 yards and senior Arland Bruce also racked up 48 yards with five catches.

Sophomore Mike Albert connected on two of three field goal attempts. He nailed a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter and split the uprights again in the second quarter from 37 yards out.

The Golden Gophers will open their 1999 season Sept.4, 1999, against Ohio at the Metrodome.
