THROWERS LEAD GOPHER WOMEN IN SATURDAY MEETS

With a throw of 189 feet, one inch, Howard surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event. The throw bettered her previous record of 186-2, set just two weeks ago at the Hayward Relays in Eugene, Ore.
Meyer set personal-bests in winning both the discus and hammer throw. Her effort of 154-3 in the discus bested teammate Jenny Luer by 17 inches while she won the hammer by over 11 feet with a throw of 167-9.
Minnesota got one other first-place finish at Macalester as Ali Gartner ran a season-best 58.86 seconds while teammate Kristie Stiles was fourth in the event at 1 minute, 0.01 seconds.
At the Drake Relays, Aubrey Schmitt also provisionally qualified in the shot put with a season-best effort of 50-4 to finish third while Nicole Chimko placed eighth with an effort of 46-8 3/4.
The duo also had top 10 places in the disucs as Chimko was fifth with a throw of 157-8 while Schmitt was 10th at 148-8.
Minnesota had three other top 10 finishes. Rasa Michniovaite was sixth in the Invitational 1,500-meter run in 4:24.13. Angie was ninth in the hammer throw with an effort of 168-4 and the 4x800-meter relay team of Minna Haronoja, Jessica Shuster, Gena Johnson, Jenny Moylan was 10th in 9:06.63.
Christine Gulbrandsen, who won the triple jump with a school-record effort of 41-8 3/4 Friday, set a new school record in the pole vault Saturday, clearing 11-5 1/4, one of five athletes to reach the mark, settling for 14th in the event after tie-breaking procedures.
