MINNESOTA STORM WINS JUNIOR FREESTYLE AND GRECO-ROMAN NATIONAL TITLES

Along with winning the two team titles, several individuals took home titles and qualified for the 1999 FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships in Sydney, Austrailia, August 19-22 and the 1999 FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, Aug. 12-15. University of Minnesota assistant wrestling coach Mark Schwab will be the head coach of the U.S. Junior Freestyle World Team.
University of Minnesota redshirt freshman Jared Lawrence of Sandpoint, Idaho, won both the 152-pound freestyle title and the 152-pound Greco-Roman title to automatically qualify for both championships in August. Lawrence will only compete in the freestyle championships. Freshman All-American Leroy Vega won the 119-pound freestyle title and will compete at the world championships. Minnesota freshman Mike Cuperus also claimed the 187.25-pound Greco-Roman title to recieve a bid to the world championships.
Also placing third in the freestyle championships was Minnesota redshirt freshman Jacob Clark, who decisioned Robbie Waller of Oklahoma 13-10. Minnesota redshirt freshman Garrett Lowney also placed second in the 213.75-pound Greco-Roman weight class, losing to Justin Ruiz 7-0. Lowney will wrestle in the Greco-Roman championships.
Minnesota redshirt freshman Mitch Marr, who finished second to Lawrence in the 152-pound weight class at the Greco-Roman Championships, will wrestle in the Greco-Roman Championships. Damion Hahn, who signed with Minnesota last November, won the 187.25-pound freestyle title and will also compete at the world championships.
