IOWA STATE DEFEATS GOLDEN GOPHERS 7-6 IN EXTRA INNINGS

After trailing the entire game, Minnesota tooks its first lead with three runs in the ninth to take a 6-4 lead. Iowa State rallied in the bottom of the inning off of Gopher reliever Jason Shupe and knotted the game at six.
The Golden Gophers went down 1-2-3 in the tenth inning with three straight ground outs to second baseman Spencer Allen. In the bottom of the tenth, Jason McNertney singled off of reliever Vince Gangl. McNertney was sacrificed to second base. Gangl then struck out Brad Bjorklund. With two outs, Allen sent Gangl's first pitch to left center field just past the diving Mike Arlt and McNertney scored with ease to seal the victory. Allen finished with three hits and two RBIs.
Iowa State jumped to a 3-0 lead off of Gopher starter Mike Kobow (1-1) in the third inning. Kobow, making only his second career appearance, pitched four innings and allowed three runs on three hits. He struck out four and walked three.
Quinlan pulled the Gophers to within 3-1 with a solo home run in the sixth, but the Cyclones matched it with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Minnesota added a run in both the seventh and eighth innings with a sacrifice fly from Mike Arlt and a RBI double from Quinlan.
Minnesota took the lead in the ninth as the Gophers strung together four hit in the inning. Scott Howard had a two-run single with the bases loaded and Quinlan added a RBI single to right center.
