Chadd Clarey pitched six solid innings and improved to 2-0 as Minnesota defeated the host Boilermakers 9-2. Sophomore Josh Holthaus was 3-for-5 with two RBIs including a solo home run as Minnesota took 3-out-of-4 in the Big Ten opener.

Minnesota took control of the game with a five-run sixth inning that upped the lead to 8-1. Neither team recorded a hit until the fourth inning, when the Golden Gophers broke through for three runs against Purdue left-hander David Glassner (3-2). After the five-run sixth, Holthaus' solo home run made it 9-1.

Clarey, a junior-college transfer from Des Moines Area C.C., gave up one run on five hits in six innings. He struck out four without surrendering a walk. Junior Frank Wagner pitched the final three innings to record his second save.

Minnesota (19-7) travels south for a Tuesday game against Northern Iowa. This weekend the Golden Gophers travel back to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes.
