SWIMMER ALEX MASSURA WINS SILVER MEDAL IN PAN AMERICA GAMES

medalThe University of Minnesota men's swimmer Alex Massura won the silver medal in the 100m backstroke at the Pan America Games held in Winnipeg, Canada over the weekend.

With winning the silver medal, he qualified for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and will represent Brazil. His time of 55.17 set a new South American record and is currently the fourth-best time in the world.

Massura, a native of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, was also apart of the 400-medley team that beat the U.S. team and won the gold medal in the Pan America Games. Their time of 3:40.27 was a Pan American Games record that broke the U.S. record of 3:40.42 that was set in 1983.
