GOPHERS DROP OPENER OF EUROPEAN TRIP TO MANCHESTER GIANTS

bThe Golden Gopher basketball team dropped the opener of its European trip 105-69 to the Manchester Giants in Hemel Hempstead, England today. The Maroon and Gold jumped out to a brief 4-2 lead before being outscored 26-4 over the next eight minutes. The Golden Gophers were outscored 40-7 at the free throw line as the Giants hit 40-42 from the charity stripe. The Golden Gophers had 24 fouls to Manchester's 12.

Manchester used the end of the first quarter run to take a commanding lead of 8-28 at the half. Minnesota outscored Manchester 24-22 in the third quarter as they played their best basketball of the game. Manchester outscored Minnesota 25-17 in the fourth quarter. Manchester had five former U.S. collegiate players including Travis Conlan of Michigan (11pts) and Porter Roberts of Purdue (13 pts). Phil Handy (Hawai'I) tallied 19 points to lead his team, followed by Tony Dorsey's (No. Alabama) 17 points and Tony Holley's (Troy State) 14 points.

Minnesota was led by Joel Przybilla, who scored 15 points, 11 in the second half. John Blair Bickerstaff added 12, Terrance Simmons had nine points and Nick Sinville and Mitch Ohnstad had eight each. Dusty Rychart tallied seven points, Kevin Nathaniel and Ryan Keating had four each and Kevin Burleson had two to round out the Minnesota scoring. The Golden Gophers will play the Birmingham Bullets tomorrow at 4 p.m. (10 a.m. Minneapolis time) at the Hemel Hempstead Sports Center.
