GOPHERS HANG ON TO DEFEAT BIRMINGHAM BULLETS

shoThe Golden Gopher basketball team held on to defeat the Birmingham Bullets 80-79 in a game played 18 hours after the first game of the tour. Minnesota defeated the Budweiser Division I pro team by shooting over 50 percent from the field. The Maroon and Gold was 31-61 from the field and 6-13 from the three-point range.

Minnesota jumped out to a 21-17 lead in the first quarter and pushed that to 39-33 at halftime. The Bullets battled back and tied the game with six minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets until the end when Terrance Simmons hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 14.2 seconds remaining. Minnesota held off the Bullets final chances defeating the 1999 Budweiser League champions, who featured nine former U.S. collegiate players.

The Golden Gophers again trailed in free throw attempts 37-20 and were outscored at the line 29-12. Minnesota won with balanced scoring with six players scoring eight or more points. The Maroon and Gold was led for the second consecutive time by Joel Przybilla who tallied 16 points and seven rebounds with four blocks. Mitch Ohnstad tallied 12 points, as did Simmons. Kevin Nathaniel had 10 points, eight in the second half and Dusty Rychart scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Golden Gophers depart Monday morning for Dover where they will ferry to Calais, France and bus to Paris. Along the way the team will stop at WWII memorials on the coast of France. A Seine River tour is scheduled for Monday evening and a trip to the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles is scheduled for Wednesday. Game three of the European tour is on Tuesday vs. the Evreux Basketball Club at 8 p.m.
