Tyrone Carter and Billy Cockerham along with junior Ben Hamilton have been named captains of the 1999 University of Minnesota football team.

Carter, a strong safety from Pompano Beach, Fla., will look to become the first Golden Gopher since Bobby Bell ('61 and '62) to earn back-to-back first-team All-America honors. He heads into the season ranked third on the all-time Minnesota record list with 384 career tackles. Carter needs just 98 tackles to become the all-time career Division I-A total tackles leader. He also holds the school record with 298 career solo tackles.

Cockerham, a native of Clayton, Calif., is the returning starter at quarterback for the Golden Gophers. He threw for 1,150 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. He also has 449 career rushing yards to his credit heading into the 1999 season.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., Hamilton is an All-America and All-Big Ten candidate in 1999. He has been the starting center for the Golden Gophers for the past two years. Last season Hamilton gave up only one sack all season and did not have a penalty called against him.
