GOPHERS SWEEP MONTANA STATE IN DIET COKE CLASSIC OPENER

SportsNicole Branagh pounded 13 kills to lead four Gophers in double figures as Minnesota swept Montana State in three games, 15-2, 15-11, 15-6, at the Sports Pavilion in the first round of the Diet Coke Classic.

Branagh had eight of her kills in the third game to continue her streak of 36 double-figure kill matches. Minnesota's two middle hitters had big nights, as Charnette Fair created new career highs with 12 kills and an .833 hitting percentage, while Linda Shudlick contributed 12 kills and a .647 hitting percentage, both season highs.

The Gophers (7-3) outhit the Bobcats (8-3) .404-.116, holding Montana State to a negative hitting percentage in the first two games. Minnesota had 59 kills to Montana State's 29, and outblocked the Bobcats, 10-4.

In the night's first match, Denver (5-3) needed only 61 minutes to defeat Navy (5-5), 15-4, 15-7, 15-5. The Pioneers limited the Mids to a .009 hitting percentage. Saturday, Minnesota will play Denver at 1 p.m. and Navy at 8 p.m. in the final two rounds of the Diet Coke Classic.
