GOPHER SOCCER LOSES BIG TEN OPENER TO ILLINOIS IN OVERTIME
9/17/1999 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
soLife among Big Ten Conference women's soccer teams will not be easy in 1999. Case in point the Minnesota/ Illinois match on Friday hat wasn't decided until the 112th minute of action when Illinois' sophomore forward Emily Brown deposited Kelly Buszkiewicz's free kick pass into the net of the Minnesota goal.
After playing to a scoreless firs half, Minnesota (2-3, 0-1 Big Ten) struck first in the second half when Samantha Meyers blasted her first goal of the season off an assist by Nicole Lee at the 45:52 mark.
No. 21-ranked Illinois (6-1, 1-0 Big Ten) battled back with a Lindsay Johnson goal at 70:17 to knot the score, but neither team could capitalize late, sending the game into the first of two overtime periods.
The Gophers were outshot by a 19-13 margin, with forwards Lee and Laurie Seidl each collecting three scoring opportunities. Illinois goalkeeper Amy Bessette needed only three saves to earn the victory in net.
Minnesota continues its Big Ten schedule on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Iowa.
