University of Minnesota head men's hockey coach Don Lucia announced today that Hobey Baker Award winning goaltender Robb Stauber has been named volunteer goaltending coach for the 1999-2000 season.

Stauber replaces Bob Mason, who recently accepted a position with the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers. Mason had served as a Golden Gopher assistant since the beginning of the 1996-97 season. Stauber joins assistant coaches Mike Guentzel and John Hill on Lucia's staff for this season.

"I am excited to have Robb aboard as a member of our coaching staff," said Lucia. "When you think about the great players in Golden Gopher history, Robb's name immediately comes to mind. Being able to tap into his vast knowledge and experience as a collegiate and professional goaltender will be a real asset to our program."

Stauber, a first-team All-American and all-WCHA selection, still holds numerous goaltending records at the University of Minnesota, including career records for most games played (98), minutes played (5,717), wins (73), and saves percentage (.906). During Stauber's three-year career at Minnesota, the team posted a 102-34-4 record, back-to-back WCHA Championships in 1987-88 and 1988-89, and three straight NCAA Frozen Four appearances. A draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings, he played professionally for eight seasons with the Kings, Buffalo Sabres, and New York Rangers organizations.
