GOPHER WOMEN SECOND AT MINNESOTA CLASSIC

Minnesota won six individual events but Georgia's depth gave the team title to the Bulldogs at the Minnesota Classic.

Georgia outdistance the hosts Gophers 178-128. Southwest Missouri State was a distant third with 75 points.

Christine Gulbrandsen won both the triple jump and pole vault to lead Minnesota. In winning the pole vault, she set a school and Fieldhouse record by clearing 12 feet.

The Gophers' distant contingent won three events. Jessica Shuster won her first collegiate meet with a victory in the 600-meter run, turning in a winning time of one minute, 34.67 seconds. Rasa Michniovaite won the Ron Renko Mile in 4:55.7 and Corinne Nimtz added a victory in the 3,000-meter run in 9:52.50.

Beth Howard picked up the Gophers other victory as Minnesota claimed three of the top four spots in the weight throw. Howard edged out teammate Aubrey Schmitt by less than three inches, with a winning throw of 57-7 3/4.
