BALANCED MICHIGAN ATTACK DEFEATS GOPHER WOMEN

The Gophers (8-12, 1-8) missed 12 of its first 13 shots to start the game. Four different Wolverines hit three pointers in the stretch to help Michigan build a 20-4 lead, eight minutes into the contest
Cassie VanderHeyden and Moneeke Bowden traded baskets to secure a 9-0 run and bring the Gophers back to within seven points at 20-13. Michigan sandwiched two three-pointers around one by Lindsay Lieser, the second of which put the Michigan lead into double figures for good at 26-16. The Wolverines led at halftime by a score of 32-20.
Michigan expanded its lead with a 15-3 run in the first five minutes of the second half. With the Wolverine reserve in the game, Minnesota pulled to within 14 late, but was held at bay by a Michigan offense that hit 58 percent from the field in the second half and converted on 14-of-18 free throw attempts in the game.
Bowden and Erin Olson topped the Gophers with 13 points a piece. VanderHeyden, who moved into a second-place tie with Jodi Olson on the Gopher career three-point field goals list with 98, added 12.
Lieser hit two three-pointers in the game to improve her season total to 56 and tie teammate VanderHeyden's 1998-99 tally for the second-most three-pointers in a season.
Stacey Thomas led the quintet of Wolverines in double digits with 14 points, 12 of which she scored in the game's first 12 minutes.
The Gophers return to action on Thursday, Feb. 3, when they travel to face Wisconsin.
