Minnesota finished the 1999 season at 27-9 overall and 15-5 in the Big Ten Conference, good for second place. The Gophers set a school record for Big Ten wins and came within two overall wins of the school's 29-win total in 1989. Minnesota qualified for its fifth NCAA Tournament, and advanced to the "Sweet 16" for the third time in school history, before losing to Penn State, the 1999 NCAA champion. The Nittany Lions were a unanimous choice as the top team in the poll. Wisconsin was the other Big Ten team in the poll, ranked 23rd.
