ALUMNI TEAM DEFEATS VARSITY IN ANNUAL ALUMNI MEET

theThe University of Minnesota men's alumni gymnastics team defeated the varsity by a score of 223.35-216.05 in the 33rd annual alumni meet held Saturday afternoon at the Sports Pavilion.

Leading the way for the alumni team was former Golden Gopher greats John Roethlisberger and Tim LaFleur who each won two events. Roethlisberger won the pommel horse with a score of 9.85 and the still rings with a score of 9.7, while LaFleur won the floor exercise with a score of 9.3 and the horizontal bar with a score of 9.55. Frank Ticknor won the all-around with a score of 55.35.

For the varsity team, senior Ryan Winterbourne won the parallel bars competition with a score of 9.65. He also was the varsity's highest finisher in the all-around with a score of 53.45, good enough for third place. Senior Chad Conner finished in a tie for second place on the horizontal bar with a score of 9.5 and freshman Clay Strother finished second on the floor exercise with a score of 9.15.

The Golden Gophers open the regular season next Saturday night at the Windy City Open in Chicago, Ill.
