"We're fortunate to have been able to attract and hire such a seasoned professional in athletics," said Voelz. "She will be a great addition to our department and we're happy to have her back in the Big Ten."
"I am thrilled to be joining the student-athletes, staff, coaches and administrators at the University of Minnesota," said Weaver. "The atmosphere in the department is nothing less than first class."
Weaver served as the athletics director at Cecil Community College from 1998 to 2000. During her tenure, she expanded the department's operating budget and athletic scholarships by 200 percent. She was instrumental in the addition of three women's sports and created an Athletic Performance Team to mirror the NCAA's Champs/Life Skills Program. She also developed corporate sponsorship packages for the department, including making Cecil one of the only junior colleges in the nation to have a sponsorship with a major apparel company.
Weaver has experience in the Big Ten Conference as well. She was the head field hockey coach at The Ohio State University from 1987 to 1996. She directed the Buckeyes to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1994.
The sport of field hockey has been prominent in Weaver's career. She was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team that boycotted the Olympic Games in Moscow. Weaver served as a broadcast announcer and assistant producer for the field hockey venue at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She won a NCAA Division III national title as the head field hockey coach at Salisbury State University (Md.) in 1986 and served as the president of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association from 1987-91.
Weaver earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and biological sciences from Lock Haven University (Pa.) in 1980 and a master's degree in sport sociology in 1983 from Purdue University.
Weaver replaces Laurie McLauglin, who was promoted to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intercollegiate Athletics, last month.
