U OF M BOAT DEDICATION CEREMONY SATURDAY

WhicherThe University of Minnesota rowing team will hold a boat dedication ceremony during the Head of the Mississippi Regatta on Saturday at 3 p.m. The boat will be named Sweet Emma in honor of Emma Whicher, granddaughter of boat donors Rod and Nancy Peterson.

The ceremony will take place on the river flats behind the hospital on the Minneapolis campus's East River Road. In addition to the donors, Women's Athletics Director Chris Voelz and the Minnesota rowing team will be present.

Minnesota's varsity eight boats will compete at 11 a.m. and the varsity fours will compete at 2:40 p.m. The Head of the Mississippi Regatta is the team's only event in the state of Minnesota during the fall season.

The Head of the Mississippi begins near the Lake Street Bridge and travels north to the Washington Avenue Bridge. The best locations for spectators are the river flats or the west bank between the Washington Avenue Bridge and Franklin Avenue Bridge.

Directions to the river flats on the University of Minnesota East Bank campus:
From 35W north: take the U of M exit, then the U of M East Bank exit. Turn right at the East River Parkway exit (just past the Weisman Art Museum). Turn left at the stop sign; take the first right into the parking lot at the river flats.

From 35W south: take the Washington Avenue exit, turn left and then left at the Washington Avenue Bridge turn. Turn right at the East River Parkway exit (just past the Weisman Art Museum). Turn left at the stop sign; take the first right into the parking lot at the river flats.

From I94: take the Huron Blvd. exit. Turn left at Washington Avenue. Turn left at Oak Street. Turn right at East River Parkway. Take the first left into the parking lot at the river flats.
