GOLDEN GOPHER MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS HOME OPENER
11/17/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Despite scoring the first basket, Minnesota was behind most of the first half. Finally, with 4:09 remaining in the half, the Golden Gophers tied the game at 24. The Spartans quickly regained the lead, but Minnesota fought back hard and took their first lead of the game with 2:04 remaining on a 3-pointer by junior Kerwin Fleming. That first lead sparked the Gophers for the rest of the half and they went into the locker room with a 33-28 lead at the half.
The Gophers came out firing in the second half. They went on a 20-6 run to start the half, led by outstanding play by senior Terrance Simmons. Simmons scored six points in less than two minutes, a 17- foot jumper, took the ball the length of the floor for an easy jumper and a monster dunk that got the crowd into the game. From that point on it was all the Gophers, as they held the Spartans to 33 points in the half.
UNC Greensboro's David Schuck led all scorers with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Spartan's Jay Joseph also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Gophers scoring was much more balanced, as eight different players scored between seven and 14 points. Schilling led with 14, Simmons had 12 and senior John-Blair Bickerstaff and freshman Jeff Hagen each had 11. Bickerstaff, Simmons, Schilling and freshman Michael Bauer each pulled down six rebounds.
Minnesota plays Georgia Sunday at 3 p.m. at Williams Arena before leaving for the Hawaiit Pacific Thanksgiving Classic.Box Score
