The first period went well for Minnesota as Stuart Senden, playing in his first game since Oct. 21 because of injury, scored his first goal of the season from fellow senior Matt Leimbek. Junior Adam Hauser was solid in goal with 13 saves as he shut out the opponent in the first period for the fourth consecutive game.
After a scoreless and penalty-free second period, the Spartans erupted for a pair of goals in a span of 46 seconds to take a 2-1 lead with just over 15 minutes to play in the game. Against a stingy Michigan State defense which had allowed more than two goals in a game twice this season, it was senior Aaron Miskovich that knotted the game at the 12:40 mark. Miskovich scored his ninth career shorthanded goal, one shy of Paul Broten's career record of 10.
With overtime looming, senior Dylan Mills was called for slashing at 17:27 and Michigan State capitalized as Maloney scored at 18:23.
Minnesota had gone 21-0-2 when leading after two periods under Don Lucia, but in the past three weeks, they have lost a third-period lead twice.
The second-ranked Golden Gophers will host No. 7 Michigan on Saturday night at Mariucci Arena. The Wolverines were 3-2 winners at Wisconsin on Thursday night.
