GophersMinnesota scored three goals in a 3:30 span in the third period and defeated the second-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (7-2-0, 4-1-0) 4-0 at Mariucci Arena on Saturday night. The fifth-ranked Golden Gophers outshot the Badgers 51-31, as Wisconsin failed to convert on seven power plays.

The two teams played to a 0-0 tie after two periods as Badger goalie Graham Melanson stopped 24 shots in the second period alone. Just 3:01 into the third period, senior Aaron Miskovich got the Golden Gophers on the board with his third goal of the season. Three and a half minutes later, Erik Wendell put back a rebound off Melanson from a shot by Troy Riddle to make it 2-0. Then senior captain Erik Westrum continued the assault with a backhander that went top shelf on Melanson at 7:31.

Senior John Pohl capped off the victory with a power-play goal as Westrum found Pohl all alone to the side of Melanson. It was his second goal of the season.

Westrum's two points allowed the senior to extended his consecutive games with a point streak to 13 games. Jordan Leopold extended his streak to 11 with a pair of assists.

Goaltender Adam Hauser stopped all 31 shots he faced, including 13 in the final stanza. For the junior, it was his fifth career shutout and first since Nov. 20, 1999.

Minnesota has now outscored its opponent 19-5 in the third period this season. The two teams will play the rematch on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
