WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAM CLOSES OUT FALL SEASON

Minnesota newcomer Valerie Vladea (Kitchener, Ontario/Burlington Central) defeated Simona Petrutiu of Northwestern in the first round of the ITA Midwest Championships main draw singles competition in Ann Arbor, Mich. Vladea won in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. She had to play her second-round match just 30 minutes later and lost to Chrissie Nolan of Michigan, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles competition, sophomores Amy Thomas (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park) and Michaela Havelkova (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium F.X. Saldy) lost their first match but defeated Kristi Dunham and Selma Kurtagic of Western Illinois in the consolation round, 8-6, before defaulting in the third round.
The ITA Midwest Championship was Minnesota's final competition of the fall season.
