Lowney, a Golden Gopher redshirt freshman, captured the bronze medal in the 213-pound weight class in Greco-Roman wrestling competition in September at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Competing in his first major international event at the senior level, Lowney defeated four veteran 213-pound wrestlers to gain the medal. Lowney, the youngest man in his weight class, defeated Konstantinos Thanos of Greece, 3-1 in overtime in the bronze medal match.
Lowney's bronze medal is the third Olympic medal for a University of Minnesota wrestler. Jim Martinez won bronze in 1984 and Brandon Paulson took the silver medal in 1996.
Malchow, a two-time Olympic medalist, won the gold medal in the 200- meter butterfly. He also took the silver medal in the same event at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ga. Kevin Garnett captured gold in Sydney, Australia with the U.S. basketball team.
The University of Minnesota wrestling team opens the 2000-01 season this Saturday at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D.
