GOPHER WOMEN WIN EXHIBITION GAME
11/8/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Sophomore guard Lindsay Lieser scored all 13 of her points in the second half, none bigger than the three-pointer from the right baseline to give the Gophers the lead for good at 80-79 with 1:25 left to play. Forward Tanisha Gilbert extended the Minnesota lead to four points with a steal and a three-point play with 42 ticks left.
Club Volna closed to within two on a running jumper by Olga Gorokhova with 31 seconds remaining. Minnesota attempted to run out the clock but Club Volna fouled Lindsay Whalen with 5.8 seconds left to play. Whalen made one of two free throws to make the score 84-81. Club Volna's desperation three-pointer as time elapsed hit harmlessly off the backboard.
Center Kim Prince led the Gophers with 18 points and was among five Gophers in double figures. Gilbert contributed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in her first outing in a Minnesota uniform. Kadidja Andersson added 13 points and Whalen chipped in 12.
The teams played to a 43-43 tie at halftime but the game was nearly called with 3:16 left in the first half when Club Volna coach Stanislav Gelchinski removed his team from the court in protest of the officiating. After a 15-minute delay, Club Volna returned to the court and resumed the game.
Minnesota plays its second exhibition game on Sunday against Club TTT (Riga, Latvia) at 2 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
