GOPHERS WIN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE GAME

wThe University of Minnesota Golden Gopher men's basketball team finished the non-conference portion of their season today with a 93-59 win over the Centenary College Gents in Williams Arena. The win was truly a team effort, as five Gophers scored in double figures. Minnesota's record improves to 12-1 on the year. Centenary falls to 2-9.
Minnesota jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the first half, but allowed the Gents to come within four (14-10) with 15:00 remaining in the first half. The Gophers then went on a 11-2 run to give them the 13 point lead and they never looked back. They led 50-28 at the half.
Minnesota continued to roll in the second half. Although they never were able to double the Gents score, they continued to widen the lead. The largest Minnesota lead was 34 (90-56) with 2:22 remaining in the game.
Minnesota will begin the Big Ten conference portion of the season January 3, 2001 at 7 p.m. at Illinois.

Minnesota played well in all facets, and five players scored in double figures for the first time since a 85-82 win over on on January 12, 2000. Terrance Simmons</ a> led the Gophers with 17 points and had five rebounds and four assists. Kevin Burleson and John-Blair Bickerstaff each had 14 points. Burleson had a nearly flawless game, shooting 3-for-4 from three-point range and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Dusty Rychart added 13 points and Michael Bauer had 12. Junior transfer Travarus Bennett was the Gophers leading rebounder, coming off the bench to grab eight boards.
Centenary's Ronnie McCollum led all scorers with 25. He came into the game just 22 points shy of reaching the 2,000 point mark for his career. He now has 2,003 career points and is the third leading scorer all-time for the Gents.Minnesota will begin the Big Ten conference portion of the season January 3, 2001 at 7 p.m. at Illinois.
