FLORIDA ATLANTIC DEFEATS GOLDEN GOPHERS 9-4

Fla.Florida Atlantic (6-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, added four more in the third and two more fourth and went on to hand the Golden Gophers (2-2) a 9-4 loss in Boca Raton, Fla. Friday night.

Florida Atlantic pitcher Carmen Cali stifled the Golden Gopher attack in the first four innings of the game. He retired the first nine batters he faced striking out five. Cali finished the night pitching six innings and striking out six. He did not yield a hit until the fifth inning when pinch-hitter sophomore Chris Guetzlaff got an infield hit. Then with Guetzlaff aboard at first and senior Jeremy Negen at second, sophomore Jason Kennedy hit the Golden Gopher's first home run of the year to cut into the Owl's nine-run lead.

Four of the Owl's runs in the third inning came via the long ball as Golden Gopher started Chadd Clarey gave up back-to-back home runs to Florida Atlantic's Zack Roper and Regan Samaniego to stretch the Owl lead to 7-0. They continued the long ball in the fourth inning as Anthony Mongelluzzo hit a two-run homer to give Florida Atlantic a 9-0 lead.

Minnesota threatened to cut into the Owl lead more in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Luke Appert started off the inning with walk. Freshman David Roach then hit a pinch-hit bloop single to right field putting runners at the corners. Guetzlaff singled scoring Appert from third. Guetzlaff advanced to second base on a wild pitch. But with just one down in the inning, the Gophers were unable to bring home any more runs.

Minnesota's Chadd Clarey took the loss for the Golden Gophers, his first of he season. Mike Kobow relieved Clarey in the fourth and held the Owls scoreless for the rest of the game. The two teams face each other again Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three game series.
