GOLDEN GOPHERS DEFEAT WILDCATS 4-1 BEHIND KOBOW COMPLETE GAME

4/14/2000 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

4 Sophomore RHP Mike Kobow pitched his second complete game of the season, striking out a career-high 10 batters, pushing Minnesota (21-13, 7-2) to a 4-1 win over the Northwestern Wildcats (16-16, 2-7) Friday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston, Ill. The nine-inning game was played in a brisk 1:50.

Kobow (4-2) was dominating on the mound for the Golden Gophers. After giving up a lead-off single to Northwestern's Jeremy Kurella, Kobow went on to retire the next 14 batters he faced. Kobow retired the first two batters of the fifth inning, but gave up a two-out double to Wes Robinson, who would score one batter later on a single to right by first baseman Travis Tharp. That would be the only run of the afternoon for the Wildcats as they took a 1-0 lead. After the sixth inning, he retired nine in a row until Northwestern loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth before striking out Robinson to end the game.

Minnesota came back in the top of the sixth as catcher Jeremy Negen doubled down the left field line. After a Scott Howard ground out advanced Negen to third, freshman Luke Appert tied the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Gophers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh as a Jack Hannahan, who was on second after hitting a one-out double, scored on Jason Kennedy's single to right field.

In the eighth inning, Minnesota added some insurance runs when Josh Holthaus hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the left-center field wall with a man aboard to push the Golden Gopher lead to 4-1.

Pitching was the story of the day. Through the first five innings, Northwestern RHP Zach Schara matched Kobow pitch-for-pitch as he would retire 10 Golden Gopher batters in a row. He struck out nine Gopher batters on the day and did not allow a ball to get out of the infield until the fifth inning. He would go the distance and take the loss in the game to drop his record to 3-4 on the year.

Minnesota faces Northwestern again Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
