leadMinnesota softball infielder Jordanne Nygren was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District softball team, released today. Nygren, the Big Ten's leader this season with 14 home runs, holds a 3.29 cumulative grade point average majoring in speech and hearing science.

Nygren is now eligible to appear on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration. She is the seventh softball player in Gopher history to earn Academic All- District acclaim and will attempt to become the fifth Minnesota softball player to earn Academic All-America honors. Kathy Casull was a first-team member in 1989, and Rachel Nelson (1997), Amber Hegland (1998) and Steph Midthun (1999) have earned third-team honors over the past three years.

Nygren was Minnesota's only player to receive a Big Ten award, announced Wednesday night in Iowa City, Iowa, at the Big Ten softball banquet. At second base, she was placed on the All-Big Ten third team. During the season, Nygren led the Gophers with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 47 runs batted in, 114 total bases and a .623 slugging percentage. Minnesota finished the season with a 31-28 record, the fifth consecutive season the Gophers have finished with a winning record.
