SCHMITT WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE TITLE, LINDQVIST ADDS SECOND JAVELIN TITLE

5/20/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track & Field

thrAubrey Schmitt won her third consecutive outdoor shot put title and Linda Lindqvist, with her only throw of the season, won the javelin to lead Minnesota during the second day of the Big Ten Championships.

With 28 points in the two throwing events, the Gophers head into the final day of the competition with 69 points and a seven-point lead over second-place and defending champion Purdue.

"It feels really great," Schmitt said of winning the title, her fourth overall Big Ten championship. "Everything came together at the right time today."

Her winning throw of 51 feet, one and one-half inches bested conference indoor champion, Jennifer Brown of Indiana, by four inches. Nicole Kopari was seventh in the event for the Gophers.

Lindqvist, whose win followed that of her brother, Glenn, in the decathlon earlier in the day, had not thrown before Saturday's competition. An elbow injury kept her from competing and, after her winning throw, she passed on her last five attempts.

"I'm very happy that I made it in the first throw," Lindqvist said of her 174-0 toss. "I knew that I had to do it in one throw."

The distance, a career-best, was an NCAA automatic qualifying throw but, because of her injury, she may not compete. Nicole Chimko, the 1998 winner of the event, finished third for Minnesota.

The Gophers picked up five points in the long jump from both Christine Gulbrandsen and Shani Marks, neither of whom ranked among the top eight in the conference entering the competition. Gulbrandsen's leap of 19-4 1/4 was the second best of her career while Marks, who went 19-0, topped her previous best by nearly 14 inches.

Rasa Michniovaite added two points for Minnesota, finishing seventh in the 3,000-meter run in a time of nine minutes, 45.30 seconds.

Sunday's competition gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with the meet's final event, the men's 4x400-meter relay, scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
