Mulholland is a native of Minnesota who played her high school volleyball at Concordia Academy and her college volleyball at North Dakota State. She was a five-year member of the United States National/ Olympic Volleyball Team from 1989 through 1994. Professionally, she played on the beach from 1992-97 as a member of the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League and indoor leagues in Italy and Turkey. Her coaching experience includes one year as an assistant coach at North Dakota State and two years at Wisconsin-River Falls. She is also the director of Janet Cobbs Camps and Clinics in Woodbury, Minn.
"We were in the right place at the right time to land Janet," said Minnesota head coach Mike Hebert. "Her recent retirement from a playing career and her return to the Twin Cities led Janet to be receptive to my overtures. It's not every day that you can add a local legend and Olympian to your coaching staff."
"I'm excited about the opportunity to coach at the University of Minnesota," said Mulholland. "I believe I can bring a player's perspective, after playing at a high level, to a coach's point of view."
Former University of Minnesota assistant coach Nao Ikeda has been reassigned as the team's assistant program director. Ikeda will head up the program's technical evaluation effort. Using state of the art digital computer equipment, Ikeda will provide the coaching staff with detailed video analysis of team and individual performance. She will also continue as the program's travel coordinator, scheduling coordinator, and liaison to various support units such as academic counseling, athletic training, marketing and promotions, and the Golddiggers booster club.
The 1999 Minnesota volleyball team finished 27-9, its second-best overall record in school history, and earned second place in the Big Ten Conference with a 15-5 mark. The team advanced to the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen" for the third time in school history. The 2000 Minnesota volleyball team will begin its season Sept. 1 against Kent State in Reno, Nev.
