MINNESOTA VOLLEYBALL ACHIEVES TOP TEN NATIONAL RANKING

8/1/2000 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

tThe University of Minnesota volleyball team is ranked 10th in the Volleyball Magazine preseason poll of NCAA teams. It is the first-ever top-ten preseason national ranking for a Minnesota volleyball team, and is the highest ranking of any kind for the Gophers since 1989. Minnesota was ranked ninth in the NCAA volleyball poll on Oct. 3 and Oct. 10 in 1989.

"It is a great accomplishment for this program, this athletic department and the University of Minnesota," said Minnesota head coach Mike Hebert. "Our athletic administration is fully committed to the development of a nationally competitive volleyball program, and this ranking is a step in that direction."

Minnesota will open the 2000 volleyball season with a match Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. against Kent State in Reno, Nev. The Gophers will open a 13-match home schedule at the Sports Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. by hosting Tennessee in the Diet Coke Classic.
