VANDER HEYDEN LEAVES GOPHER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
8/2/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
tJunior guard Cassie VanderHeyden (East Bethel, Minn./St. Francis H.S.) has left the University of Minnesota women's basketball team. VanderHeyden, a two-year starter for the Gophers, cited personal reasons for her departure. VanderHeyden leaves in good academic standing and academically eligible to compete.
"I will remain a student at Minnesota but am leaving the team to focus on academics," said VanderHeyden.
VanderHeyden started 29 of her 54 career games, averaging 10.3 points per game. Her two-year total of 118 career three-point field goals ranks second in Gopher history.
"It was a difficult decision and we wish her well," said Gopher head coach Cheryl Littlejohn. "We will miss her leadership on the court and her spark for the game. You can't argue when a young woman makes a decision to concentrate on her academic goals."
