GOPHER SOCCER FINDS OFFENSIVE PUNCH, DEFEATS IOWA 5-1

GoAfter scoring just four goals in its first five matches of the season, the Minnesota soccer team erupted for five goals in a 5-1 victory over Iowa to open the Big Ten Conference season. The Golden Gophers improved their record to 3-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Big Ten action. Iowa falls to 5-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.

Samantha Meyers provided the scoring punch early, taking advantage of an Iowa foul in the box, to blast home a penalty kick just 3:52 into the match. Sophomore Meghan Jones tagged the first goal of her career at the 28:00 mark, launching a 35-yard shot just out of the reach of Hawkeye goalkeeper Liz Hendel.

Freshman Kecia Lee put the Gophers up, 3-0, at halftime with a goal off an assist by Erin Holland at the 33:44 mark. Holland's assist moves her into sole possession of 10th place in the Gopher record book for career assists with 11.

Iowa's Kate Walse put the Hawkeyes on the board at the 52:02 mark, chipping in a loose ball over the head of Gopher keeper Julie Eibensteiner. It was Walse's sixth goal of the season.

The Gophers added to the scoring barrage with goals from Keely Dinse at 69:46 and Laurie Seidl at 80:21. Dinse netted a rebound off a Seidl shot for the first goal of her Gopher career. Seidl and Jones were credited with assists on the play. Seidl notched her third goal of the season, heading in a cross from Jones from the right side.

Jones finished the match with one goal and two assists, the first multi-point match of her career.

Minnesota continues its Big Ten slate on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. match against Illinois at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
