GOLDEN GOPHER TRACKSTERS IMPRESSIVE IN SEASON OPENER

teamThe University of Minnesota's track and field team put in some great performances in its first meet of the 2001 season at the Northwest Open in the U of M Fieldhouse. Members of the Golden Gopher team took top honors in six events.
Senior Bob Quade, competing as an unattached athlete, took first in the 400m with a time of 49.20. Freshman Adam Steele won the 600m with a 1:21.33. Fellow freshman Ryan Ford, running unattached, finished right behind him at 1:23.19. Freshman Martin Robeck, also competing unattached, won the 800m with a time of 1:55.34. Senior Brian Meyer and fellow freshman Jon Ortloff finished in second and third respectively. Senior Jeremy Polson won the mile with a career-best time of 4:15.51. Freshman Josh DoBell took second in the same event with a 4:16.19. The 4x400m relay team of Steve Burkholder, Andy Wohlin, Andy Wiberg and Mitch Potter won their event with a 3:19.11. Senior Ben Meyer won the only field event for the Golden Gophers with a throw of 54-6 3/4 in the weight throw. Fellow senior Mark Fahey, competing unattached, took second and Mike Ehlers and Lynden Reder took fourth and fifth respectively.
Although a current Gopher didn't win the 60m, a former Gopher did, with four members of the current team right behind him. Tyrone Minor, running for the Performance Athletics track club, won with a 6.84. Mitch Potter, Ben Taylor, Matt Taylor and Steve Burkholder finished in the next four places. Four Minnesotans also placed in the 60m hurdles. Ryan Melena took third with a time of 8.41. Joronne Williamson, Derek Sykes</ a> and Scott Ferguson took fifth, seventh and eighth respectively.
In the field events, Mike Ehlers and Jesse Madsen took fifth and seventh in the shot put. Marc Johannsen tied for third in the high jump with a jump of 6-8 3/4. Scott Berggren and Derek Sykes took fifth and sixth at 6-6 3/4. Lyndon McDowell took sixth in developmental pole vault.
The Golden Gophers will be at home again next week for the Minnesota Invitaional. The meet begins at 11 a.m. in the U of M Fieldhouse.
