GOPHERS HOLD OFF LATE BOILERMAKER CHARGE TO WIN 70-67

tThe Minnesota (14-3, 2-2) men's basketball team held off a late charge from Purdue (11-5, 3-2) to hang on for a 70-67 win Wednesday night at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers took a 35-18 lead into the lockerroom at the half, and had to hold off a hot-shooting Purdue team that converted 64 percent of its field goals in the second half.
Minnesota completely shut down the Boilermakers in the first half, limiting them to 7-of-36 shooting. Minnesota went on a 9-0 run to end the half and take the 17 point lead. Purdue's 18 points was the fewest Minnesota allowed in a half all season.
Purdue came out ready to go in the second half and opened with a 9-1 run to close the lead to just nine points. Purdue went on a 9-0 run to cut the Minnesota lead to four points at 47-43 with 11 minutes remaining. Minnesota worked hard to keep their lead, but Purdue's Rodney Smith hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds left to cut the Gopher lead to one at 68-67. Kevin Burleson then made two free throws to give the Gophers the three-point edge with ten seconds left. A three-point attempt by Purdue's Joe Marshall clanked off the front of the rim as time expired to give Minnesota their 14th win of the season.
Minnesota returns to the Williams hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 20 to face Indiana at 11:45 a.m. The game time has been changed from its original 11:15 a.m. start due to the telecast of the United States Presidential Inauguration.

Dusty Rychart led all scorers with 23 points and a team-high five assists. Terrance Simmons added 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds. John-Blair Bickerstaff and Michael Bauer each added 12 points.
Purdue was led by Marshall with 13 points.
