1/19/2001 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

Matt Murray scored a pair of goals as Wisconsin defeated Minnesota 4-2 in WCHA action in Madison on Friday night. The Badgers, who were 1-6-1 in their last eight home games, were led by goalie Graham Melanson's 34 saves. The two teams meet again on Saturday night.

Wisconsin never trailed in the game as Matt Demarchi turned the puck over to the left of Adam Hauser. From behind the goal, Kent Davyduke found Eric Jensen in front of the net and he beat Hauser on Wisconsin's first shot of the game at 1:03.

Minnesota responded just over two minutes later. As the Badgers killed off a penalty, Matt Koalska brought the puck in front of the goal, waited, and lifted a wrist shot over Melanson's left shoulder at 3:50.

Tied at 1-1 after two periods, the Badgers took control for good in the second. Marc Jackson brought the puck into the Gopher zone and his centering pass was deflected back to Murray who beat Hauser with his wrister.

The Badgers increased the lead to two goals on a 3-2 break as Dan Boeser dished it off to Matt Hussey and his slapshot beat Hauser top shelf.

Minnesota made things interesting in the third period as Jeff Taffe got on the scoreboard. Erik Wendell stole a pass from behind the net and found Taffe in front who beat Melanson as he laid down on the ice.

The Badgers sealed the game though, just over two and a half minutes later. Jordan Leopold broke in all alone on Melanson but his shot missed the goal. Dany Heatley gained control of the puck heading the other way for Wisconsin. He found Murray coming in on the right and his shot sneaked past Hauser on his right side to seal the victory.

The two teams failed to connect on 11 power-plays. Minnesota was 0-for-5, despite having the nation's leading power-play entering the night.
