GOPHERS UPSET NO. 12 WISCONSIN AT WILLIAMS ARENA

wThe Minnesota Golden Gophers handed no. 12 Wisconsin their first Big Ten loss of the season with a 54-49 upset at Williams Arena. The Gophers beat a ranked team for the first time since Feb. 9, 2000 when they upended ninth ranked Indiana 77-75 at Williams Arena. After Wisconsin led 24-23 at the half, Minnesota took the lead with 16:08 left in the game and never looked back. The Gophers extended their lead to 11 with three minutes remaining and held off a late Badger comeback to secure their first Big Ten win of the season.

The Gophers were able to overcome a 10-minute scoring drought at the end of the first half that extended into the beginning of the second frame. A three-pointer by Minnesota leading scorer at the 17:45 mark got the Gopher guns going again. The Golden Gophers also withstood a poor night at the free throw line as they hit just 10-of-20 attempts. Howeve, senior John- Blair Bickerstaff hit four consecutive free throw in the last 1:18 to ice the game.

Schilling led the Gophers with 12 points including a 3-of-3 performance from beyonf the three-point arc. Michael Bauer chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds. Bickerstaff and Dusty Rychart added nine a piece. Sophomore forward Ryan Wildenborg played inspired basketball off the bench with six points and a career-high nine rebounds.

Wisconsin's Maurice Linton led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Minnesota limited the Badgers to just 34 percent from the field and 15 percent from behind the three-point arc.

Minnesota has a full week off before facing Ohio State on Jan. 13 in Columbus, Ohio.
