escapeAfter a shaky first game of the series, the seventh-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team avoided the sweep today against first-ranked Minnesota-Duluth in Duluth, Minn. The Gophers escaped the sweep and gain a point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association-Women's League with a 1-1 overtime tie against the Bulldogs.

In the first period, UMD scored 57 seconds into the game when the Bulldogs' Laurie Alexander put the puck past rookie goalie Brenda Reinen. The Gophers would regroup and answer UMD's goal with the first goal of the series on a breakaway from junior Gwen Anderson at 10:05 also in the first. Anderson stole the puck and went one-on-one with UMD's goalie Patricia Sautter and earned her first collegiate goal, which turned out to be the game-tying goal.

The two teams would then go scoreless for the remainder of the game. Reinen, in her first collegiate start, faced 38 Bulldog shots on goal and stopped 37 in her first game as a Gopher. UMD finished the contest with 38 shots, while Minnesota had 18. Both teams went 0-1 on the power play opportunity.

Next action for the Gophers will be the on the road against Mercyhurst in Erie, Penn. The game is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start Friday, Oct. 26. Minnesota closes out the weekend at Niagara Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
